Headshots FAQ a long time coming. I probably get more questions about headshot sessions than I do any others (minus weddings). So, my goal here is to help you feel more prepared and excited about your headshot sessions.

First, I’m going to be answering why professional headshots matter, when to get them, and where to do them. Then, I’ll get into some of the most frequently asked questions I get from clients.

Headshot Basics:

  1. Why get professional headshots: If you haven’t read why I recommend branding photography, that’s a good place to start. But, to put it simply: If you want other’s to take your business seriously, you will need to take the first step. You need to look professional. Investing in a quality headshot shows potential clients that you are the real deal. This is a time when an iphone selfie isn’t going to cut it. Want to see a side by side difference? Here ya go.
  2. When to do headshots: As soon as you’re ready to launch your business or take it to the next level, book it! As far as the season, here are two resources that are helpful. As always keep your brand in mind. Time of day as always- is evenings/early afternoon based on the month.
  3. Where to take headshots: So many options here. But, I’ll start with this: You want your photo to be expressive of who you are. Keep in mind, you are the focus of this image. The background is important, but it is not the main component. You are. In the case of headshots- we are very focused on lighting over location. Sure, we can get some with some mountains in the backdrop or in grassy field. But, for your profile pictures, e-mail signatures, and business cards- your clients want to see you. You are your brand. (Read that again).

Headshots FAQ:

  1. What should I wear for my headshots? Start here: What to wear for your session. Next, think about your brand- try to get close to a neutral to match that. When you are building your website and social media presence- you want all this to be cohesive. So, if your brand colors are light blue and grey- wearing a red shirt, is going to look out of place. Being comfortable is so important in your headshots, if you are uncomfortable it will show.
  2. Posing: I’ve got you covered in this area. This is usually what clients tells me stresses them the most about Headshots. It’s not every day that you stand in front of the camera and get professional pictures taken. Luckily for you- this is what I do every day, so don’t worry about a thing, I’ll coach you all the way though.
  3. What to use headshots for: Quick list- LinkedIn profile photo, social media profiles, business cards, website, e-mail signatures, IG introductions, social media spotlights, resumes, etc . . .
  4. How many images do I get: As with all sessions, I do not guarantee a specific number of images. There are a variety of variables that influence that. However, I am an overshooter and I promise you will walk away with more images than you planned on.
  5. Can I bring more than one outfit? Yup, you can bring as many as you’d like- keep in mind, changing will take up time- and the sun will only allow us so much. I recommend 3-4. 2 Dressy and 2 business casual.
  6. How can I best prepare for my headshot session: There isn’t tons of prep you need to do for this type of photo session. Get on the calendar with your photographer, plan your outfits, schedule a haircut prior (or just have it how you like day of), Ladies- have your nails done- if that’s you and want that to show. Plan on the session taking anywhere from 45-1.5 hours (not including drive time). Pump yourself up. For real. Put on your best pump playlist on the way over and tell yourself that you are going to #nailit because you are!

Also, a friendly reminder that your headshots should reflect you, your style, your brand. They can be up close and tight for an e-mail shot, you actively doing what you do, you laughing, full body, spinning in a field. Headshots do not always have to be so stark and serious. Don’t be afraid to mix it up a little and have fun with it!
