Iphone VS Pro, this blog has been a long time coming. I am thrilled that I am finally sitting down to write it.

I am starting this blog with some disclaimers so I am not hammered with e-mails. First, I am NOT hating on Iphones, I flippin’ LOVE mine. Second, by all means- when appropriate, take your phone out of your pocket and snap some of whatever moment is happening that you want to look back on. For real, do it. Last, yes, phones these days take decent photos. Agreed. They have come a LONG way and they work perfectly for the every day captures.

Now, having said all that. An Iphone or (replace with whatever phone your holding) is not a replacement for a professional grade camera and a photographer- for the big moments.

What are the big moments? Here are a few: Senior portraits, family photos, newborn pictures, engagement photos, announcements, Weddings (100%), etc . . .

Again, I use my iphone all the time to grab a few quick shots of what’s happening in the moment. But, when we are all dressed up, it’s a big deal (read – I have 5 kids and a husband and I’m going to make this count). I want to hang these photos up, put them in a book, print them on a canvas, use for Christmas Cards, all the things! Iphone photos will not print the same.

Key Points on Iphone Vs Pro:

Quality: This is first because it’s the most important. Quality, quality, quality. See images below for this. Pretty much enough said. There is no beating the quality of a professional camera with a professional behind the camera. (No, the camera doesn’t take the photos on their own, it’s only as good as the person using it.) If you want to blow up a photo for a large print but it’s taken with a phone camera- count on pixelation and a lot of noise. I could get really technical and nerdy here on PPI, file image formats, and resolution but I’m sure you would slowly drift off and miss my point.

Color: Color is something we master as photographers. Both in camera and in our edits. Color will make or break a photo. Take a photo with your iphone of a gorgeous sunset and see how the photos just doesn’t do it justice, you’ll see what I am talking about .

Experience: Why try to get your phone at just the right angle? Or get it to stay propped up while trying to pose your whole family and make sure you look your best when you can have someone do all that stress for you? (fun fact: this is part of the job- believe or not- we enjoy it!) We know how to pose so it’s flattering, we can guide you on what to do so you don’t have to worry about feeling awkward, and you’ll have multiple choices to choose from so you aren’t stuck with just a few ‘okay’ shots. Plus, you deserve a break from all that you do anyway.

Details: The details and clarity that come from professionals vs phones is incredible. For example, emotions, words, your baby’s gorgeous eyelashes. Those can all be seen so much better with professional photos. Because of the way I shoot, my subject is the focus. Which means, that everything in front of it, behind it, or even to the sides is not what your eye is drawn to. That is one aspect that makes a photo so powerful and emotional- the detail you can see.

Professionalism: If you are using these photos for ANYTHING professional. Headshots for an online profile or an e-mail signature, business cards, your website, social media marketing, etc . . . you want professional photos. Potential clients will take you more seriously, if you take your business more seriously. If you want to look like a professional in your line of work, you’ll need the photos to back that up. I don’t want to beat a dead horse, so I’m going add some examples below where you can see the drastic difference.

Again, grab your phone and take a photo of your kiddo blowing out their birthday candles or of them in their cute little floaties at the pool, but when you want photos to hang on your walls or really capture a certain stage or moment, or bring your business to then next level. Call a professional. Let us do our thing. It is what we love to do!

A bit of a difference, right?

This Wedding day was gorgeous, but it was overcast. Iphone photos make the day look drab and grungy- look how the colors are vibrant and the whole photo brought to life on the right.

Zoom baby zoom. That bokeh- can’t get that with a phone camera people, can’t get it.
