Colorado Elopement: Insider Tips for a Magical Day
Hey there, friends! Elopements are on the rise, and a Colorado elopement is pure magic. It’s intimate, personal, and full of adventure. I’m here to share my insider tips to help you plan a stress-free, unforgettable day.
Timing and Seasons- Timing is key for a Colorado Elopement
Spring and Fall: Spring offers blooming wildflowers and gentle light. While you could encounter some windy days and lower temps, it’s still definitely a favorite among tourists. Fall brings warm hues and crisp air. The colors are insane in Western Colorado, the temperatures cool at night, but the day time is usually near perfect. Both seasons provide soft, natural lighting. This makes your Colorado elopement feel relaxed and dreamy
Summer: Summer sunsets in Colorado are vibrant and dramatic. Most days the sunsets are so captivating that you’ll catch people on stop on their daily walks just to admire it. However, summer can be unpredictable. The season can still bring wind and rain, though it is usually only temporary. Plan accordingly by checking the forecast for your location and chatting with locals about the normal patterns of that specific area.
Winter: Winter elopements in Colorado are straight out of a hallmark movie—think snow-covered peaks, cozy vibes, and dreamy, golden sunsets. While the landscapes are stunning, winter weather can be unpredictable, with road closures and freezing temps. If you’re up for the adventure, a winter elopement can be breathtaking, just be sure to dress warm and plan for changing conditions!
In every season, check the weather do your best to be flexible. A well-timed session makes your Colorado elopement stress-free and magical.
Choosing Your Perfect Spot
Your location sets the stage for your day. Check out my Best Colorado Elopement Locations for some of my top local favorites.
Choose your Vibe: Choose a spot that reflects your unique style and love story. Maybe you want to say ‘I do’ on an epic mountain or beside a quiet lake. Or, maybe you prefer a more wooded forest type area with wildflowers all over. Scout out your elopement location the best you can to ensure you can get the elopement photos of your dreams.
Privacy & Access: Look for locations that offer privacy and ease of access. Some locations will require a hike or a steep road that requires 4WD. Also, when in doubt, google/chatgpt your exact location and then double check by calling the county to see what help they can offer. This ensures that you have space to be yourselves. Consider spots that feel intimate and undisturbed.
Fees & Permits: Some Colorado elopement locations require permits, especially in national parks, state parks, and public lands. Fees vary depending on the location and group size. Popular spots like Rocky Mountain National Park and Maroon Bells require reservations in months in advance. Always check with park offices or land agencies to make sure you’re covered for your elopement day. If you are hiring an elopement company like- Simply Eloped, or someone similar- they will likely take care of this for you.
Your chosen location will set the scene for your Colorado elopement. Do as much due diligence and research as possible prior to your bi day, so you can be prepared and at ease!
Personal Touch and Style
Your elopement is all about you. Remember, you and your partner chose to elope for a reason. Continually come back to that reason/s. Your elopement should not feel forced or rushed. Only include things and people you love.
Authentic Outfits: Wear something that makes you feel like your best self. Choose outfits that reflect your personality and comfort. I find a lot of brides love to splurge on their gown for elopements. Since the larger costs of a wedding are not usually part of an elopement. Girl, do it. Find the wedding dress of you dreams and feel like a complete queen for the day.
Custom Elements: Include items that tell your story. Think of heirlooms, handwritten vows, or personal decorations. I’ve had couple exchange the most previous gifts of memories from their first date to a letter declaring their undying love. I’ve photographed an amazing couple who brought an old lantern from her late Grandmother to use after the sun set. (Guys, this was dreamy and truly a favorite) There are few limits here. So go wild.
Natural Expressions: Let your true emotions shine. Your genuine smiles and quiet moments add depth to your images. Elopements aren’t about show and big grand parties. They are typically about more intimate, romantic, fun, adventures and ceremonies. Don’t be afraid to shed tears when you feel moved or laugh when your new spouse whispers something funny in your ear. Let all expectations go and be present.
Keep It Simple and Stress-Free
Elopements are celebrated for their simplicity.
Focus on What Matters: Concentrate on genuine connection rather than elaborate details. Simple setups allow your love story to take center stage. A gorgeous full bouquet, your dream gown, your guy in his best suit that makes him irresistible, vow books, a swooping veil (if that’s your jam), and some sweet little meaningful details are all you need.
Relaxed Timeline: Plan a timeline that gives you plenty of breathing room. Avoid over-scheduling so you can enjoy each moment. I like to add an extra 15 minutes on to each segment to create a safe buffer.
Minimal Planning Stress: Choose elements that are easy to manage. When things stay simple, your Colorado elopement feels natural and joyful. If the location allows for a champagne pop- great. All we need is a bottle, an opener, and two glasses. If you want music – Iphone and a bluetooth speaker should do it.
Partnering with the Right Photographer
Choosing the right photographer makes a HUGE difference.
Local Expertise: I bring local knowledge to every Colorado elopement. I know the hidden gems and best lighting spots across the state especially on the Western Slope. This is key when hiring a photographer. Hiring someone out of state, may overlook permits, hidden gem locations, or the proper license/insurance.
Creative, Relaxed Style: My approach is casual yet refined. I focus on capturing genuine moments and authentic emotions. I do prompt and pose you throughout your elopement. This is mainly to help you both engage and interact so I can capture those in-between moments. Trust the process. I promise you won’t be dissapointed.
Documenting Your Story: Working with you to hear about your vision is key here. Learning who you are as a couple- what you like to do for fun, for work, and your personalities- helps me gauge how to capture you best. Photographing elopements, is not a one-sized fits all.
Final Thoughts
Eloping in Colorado is all about celebrating your love in a way that feels right for you. Whether it’s on a mountaintop, deep in the forest, or somewhere totally unexpected, it’s going to be breathtaking. Keep it simple, focus on the moments that matter, and soak it all in—because this is your day, your way.
If a Colorado elopement sounds like your kind of adventure, let’s make it happen! Reach out, and let’s start planning something incredible together. I can’t wait to hear all about your vision!
