Best Places for Fall Colors in Western Colorado– Autumn Color Locations
If you’re looking for the most stunning spots for fall colors in Western Colorado, you’re in luck, I’ve got the best Autumn Color Locations. We’re spoiled here with vibrant golds, yellows, and reds around every corner. Whether you’re a local or visiting, these spots are some of my absolute favorites to soak in the beauty of autumn.
The colors tend to peak from mid-September to early October, but it can vary depending on when the temps drop, the first frost, and even how windy it gets. So if you’re planning a trip, keep an eye on the weather to catch those colors at their best.
Davewood Road This spot is local to Montrose, and the golden hues here are just unreal. There are groves of aspen trees all over, and the road winds through them, making it perfect for photos with that classic fall composition. If you’re looking for an epic shot, check out the area across from Elk Mountain. Trust me, this is one of those hidden gems you’ll want to visit every year.
Telluride It’s hard to beat Telluride—especially in the fall. This place just bursts with gold, and you can’t go wrong exploring the area. The gondolas are a must if you want a view that’ll take your breath away, especially at San Sophia Overlook. You can see miles of gorgeous autumn colors from up there. Afterward, take a stroll around Mountain Village, and don’t forget to grab a bite to eat at one of the great spots like The Village Table or Telluride Coffee Company. Trout Lake and all the surrounding areas are full of picture-perfect fall moments too!
Cimarron Creek Cimarron Creek is a local favorite for a reason. You’ve got everything from stone arches and wooden bridges to trees in every shade imaginable. The leaves just seem to go on forever, making it a fun spot for kids to explore too. There’s even a little creek running through part of it, which adds a perfect touch for fall photos or just hanging out for the day.
Silverjack Reservoir I don’t think I’ve ever shot at a place quite like Silverjack. It’s truly breathtaking. I just photographed a wedding here this past September, and the views were just insane, no matter where we turned. From the coolest rock formations to groves of bright yellow aspens, you won’t find a bad angle anywhere. I even did our family session here, and it’s still one of my favorite spots.
The Grand Mesa If you’re into fall wildflowers, wide-open fields, and endless fall colors, the Mesa is where it’s at. I’ve done senior sessions here, and we even took our family photos here a couple of years ago—it never disappoints. The views seem to go on forever, and the colors just pop during the fall. It’s one of those spots that feels peaceful and magical all at once.
However, these are just a few of my go-to spots for fall colors in Western Colorado, there are tons more! Each one of these autumn color locations is unique, and you really can’t go wrong no matter which you choose. So, grab your camera (or your family!) and go check them out for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
